The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) is bringing the natural and cultural heritage of the Sierra Madre closer to communities through its new traveling exhibition, “From Mountain Roots to Museum Routes: Mobile Museum Boxes for Sierra Madre’s Role in Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainability, and Climate Resilience,” or Mobile Museum Boxes (MMB) Sierra Madre.

Launched in celebration of Museums and Galleries Month 2026, the initiative is led by the NMP’s Botany and National Herbarium Division in partnership with the Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) Infanta Chapter, Mabuwaya Foundation, Inc., Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Forest Foundation Philippines, and the local governments of Real, Infanta, and General Nakar in Quezon Province.

The traveling exhibition highlights the biodiversity, cultural heritage, and communities of the southern Sierra Madre. Visitors can explore 12 museum boxes featuring terrestrial plants, animals, aquatic organisms, forest products, and material culture associated with Indigenous communities and surrounding areas.

For 2026, the exhibition takes on a mobile format inside a bus, repurposing PUP’s former Education on Wheels vehicle. The setup allows the museum experience to travel beyond traditional galleries and reach geographically inaccessible and underserved communities across Luzon.

The MMB has been bringing exhibitions to communities in the Visayas and Mindanao since 2015, supporting the NMP’s mission to make the country’s natural and cultural heritage more accessible to the public.

The Sierra Madre exhibition will tour Real, Quezon from October 7 to 11 and Infanta from October 12 to 16, before moving to PUP’s Sta. Mesa campus from October 16 to 30. Additional stops are scheduled in November, including PUP satellite areas and campuses, followed by National Science and Technology Week 2026 in General Santos City from November 23 to 29.

Through MMB Sierra Madre, the NMP continues to take museums beyond their walls, encouraging communities to better understand, appreciate, and help protect one of the Philippines’ most important mountain ecosystems.
