Where Italian Design Comes to Life

Through “Italian Encounters,” Modularity Home turned the Scavolini and Valcucine showrooms into a living lesson in Italian design, where the kitchen is seen, heard, tasted, and felt.

Valcucine Kitchen

In Italian design, the kitchen has long been more than a place to cook. It is where a household gathers, where guests drift toward at every party, and where the rhythms of daily life play out.

On September 30, that idea took center stage as Scavolini and Valcucine, represented in the Philippines by Modularity Home, welcomed the Philippine design community to the opening stop of the Manila Interior Design Summit (MIDS) 2026, organized by the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID).

Titled Italian Encounters, the experience invited MIDS attendees to do something showrooms rarely ask of visitors: to stay awhile, touch everything, and take part.

Four elements, one experience

Built around Design, Sound, Taste, and Light, Italian Encounters turned the Scavolini and Valcucine showrooms at The Proscenium in Rockwell Center into a multisensory space.

Guests did not simply look at the kitchens, rather, they stepped into them, opened the drawers, and prepared their own food and drinks using the Scavolini systems. Music and lighting shaped the mood throughout, and a specially created microzine guided guests from one element to the next.

For interior designers, the format made a quiet but important point. Good design is not judged by how a space photographs, but by how it feels in use: how a surface responds to the hand, how light changes a room from morning to evening, how sound and aroma turn a workspace into a gathering place.

By bringing collaborators across Taste, Sound, and Light into the showrooms, while keeping the Italian kitchen systems at the heart of the story, the event showed the kitchen as a stage for living, entertaining, and connecting.

Throughout the day, the showrooms also welcomed MIDS speakers, architects, interior designers, and other industry personalities, making the opening stop as much a reunion as a showcase.

Two Italian voices, one conversation

What made the showroom pairing compelling was the contrast between two distinct design philosophies, each rooted in Italy.

Valcucine Kitchen

Scavolini was founded in 1961 and grew from a family-run kitchen company into an internationally recognized name in kitchen and home design. The brand is known for combining Italian aesthetics, functionality, and versatility, creating spaces around the way people live today. It is design that adapts to people, rather than the other way around.

Valcucine, founded in 1980, brings a different emphasis: innovation, sustainability, and material research. Its approach prizes longevity, craftsmanship, and the responsible use of materials, asking how thoughtful design can create spaces made to last.

Side by side, the two brands offered designers a rich dialogue. One celebrates the livable, expressive kitchen. The other champions the enduring, carefully engineered one. Together they reflect what Italian design does best: treating beauty, function, and responsibility as parts of the same idea.

The art behind the interior

Interior design is often described as the art of arranging spaces, but at its best it is the art of understanding people. It asks how a family moves through a morning, how friends cluster around an island, how a room can feel generous at a dinner for twelve and still be calm on a quiet weeknight.

Italian kitchen design has built its reputation on answering those questions with precision and warmth.

That is the thread that ran through Italian Encounters. The showrooms were not presented as finished displays to be admired from a distance, but as living environments where materials, light, and craft could be experienced firsthand. For the designers in attendance, it was a reminder that the most memorable interiors are composed with every sense in mind.

“We are excited to welcome MIDS 2026 through Italian Encounters and give the design community a chance to experience Scavolini and Valcucine in a more immersive way. By bringing together Design, Sound, Taste, and Light, we hope to show how Italian kitchen design can become part of the way people live, gather, and connect”, said Bettina Hontiveros, President of Modularity Home.

An intimate close to the opening

The celebration continued last October 3, when Modularity Home hosted a private lunch for select MIDS speakers, VIP guests, and the PIID Board. Set within the Scavolini and Valcucine showrooms, the gathering offered a more personal side of the summit: unhurried conversation around the table, and portraits and candid moments of the people shaping the conversation in Philippine design.

From the energy of the September 30 opening to the warmth of the October 3 lunch, Modularity Home’s MIDS experience moved from the public to the personal, much like a good kitchen does.
