Long before screens dominated our attention, Filipino childhoods were shaped by the warmth of a storyteller's voice and the palpable magic of turning pages. It is a magic that weaves myth, morality, and identity into the very fabric of who we are.

Timed perfectly with the celebration of National Heritage Month, Lampara Books boldly reignited this magic, reaffirming its commitment to cultural preservation.

Last May 19, the renowned children’s book publishing house hosted a monumental book launch titled “Alalahanin, Alamin, Sari-saring Babasahin” at the National Library of the Philippines.

Unveiling a robust collection of culturally relevant titles, the event beautifully bridged long-standing traditions with modern learning, nurturing literacy, creativity, and vital social awareness among the next generation of readers.

Reviving the magic of Lola Basyang

Among the undeniable highlights of the grand launch was the introduction of the newest collection of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.

Masterfully retold by award-winning writer Christine S. Bellen-Ang, this timeless anthology draws direct inspiration from the iconic narratives originally penned by Severino Reyes.

The classic tales are brought vividly to life by an esteemed roster of highly talented Filipino illustrators, actively reintroducing today’s youth to the exact narratives that shaped previous generations through wide imagination, morality, and a shared cultural memory.

“These stories have long occupied a cherished place in Filipino childhood,” shared Segundo Matias Jr., Founder of Lampara Books and Precious Pages Corporation.

“Through these new editions, we hope to preserve their legacy while allowing a new generation of readers to discover the beauty, wisdom, and humanity found within Filipino storytelling traditions.”

Reimagining literary masterpieces for today

Complementing the beloved folktales are newly updated editions of two of Philippine literature’s most enduring masterpieces: Ibong Adarna and Florante at Laura. Edited by acclaimed scholar and children’s literature advocate Eugene Evasco, the modernized edition of Ibong Adarna guarantees a highly enriched reading experience.

It comes fully equipped with comprehensive chapter summaries, detailed vocabulary guides, and strategic comprehension prompts, boasting breathtaking cover art by Arnaldo Mirasol and intricate interior illustrations by Randy Valiente.

Similarly, the fresh edition of Florante at Laura brilliantly modernizes the classic text while rigorously preserving its inherent historical and linguistic character.

Accompanied by insightful annotations, robust glossaries, engaging discussion guides, and striking illustrations by Rowin Agarao, this new version operates perfectly as both a treasured literary resource and a crucial educational tool for contemporary learners.

Cultivating foundational literacy with innovative comics

In strict alignment with its overarching mission to promote widespread literacy and holistic learning, Lampara Books also officially launched several educational series specifically tailored to address current academic needs.

A standout is the Decodable Comics for Fluency series, available in both Filipino and English.

This innovative educational tool intelligently integrates Systematic Phonics and the highly effective Marungko Approach to thoroughly reinforce foundational reading skills for absolute beginners.

Expertly written by Daisy Jane Calado, carefully coordinated by Victor A. Villanueva, and visually realized through the illustrations of Rowin Agarao, the dynamic series successfully merges highly engaging comic-book storytelling with practical, workbook-based exercises that aggressively support reading comprehension and rapid language development.

Empowering the youth through inclusivity and rights

Beyond traditional academics, the grand launch prioritized the holistic social development of children.

The brand-new Kids Have Rights! series, penned by Michellan Sarile-Alagao and beautifully illustrated by Kim Santiago, steps in to introduce young minds to their fundamental human rights using highly accessible language and deeply relatable narratives.

Alongside this is the Sari-Sari Books series written by Genaro R. Gojo Cruz, with vibrant illustrations by Domz Agsaway.

This particular collection serves as a vibrant celebration of diversity, widespread inclusivity, and bold self-expression, actively empowering a brand-new generation of readers to fiercely appreciate individuality and foster genuine social understanding within their growing communities.

Equipping the next generation for real-world safety

Understanding that true education extends far beyond the confines of a standard classroom, Lampara Books responsibly expanded its diverse educational offerings to include highly practical life skills.

The newly introduced Disaster Ready-Kids Series, written by Zarah Gagatiga and illustrated by Juno Abreu, takes on the essential task of introducing vital, practical safety measures and comprehensive disaster preparedness directly to the young children.

Rounding out this practical approach is Kaligtasan Para sa mga Bata, thoughtfully written and illustrated by Mark Norman Boquiren, which heavily promotes public safety awareness and everyday vigilance among young Filipinos

A book is never just paper and ink—it is a seed planted in the minds of the youth.

With Lampara Books’ spectacular Heritage Month roster officially out, reading becomes far more than a tool for cultural preservation; it is a catalyst for boundless imagination and active nation-building.

By passing down these stories and equipping the next generation with the right mindset, heart, and literary tools, we aren't just looking back at our heritage—we are actively writing the next brilliant chapter of the Filipino story, one young reader at a time.
