Spring XII (Abstract #123)
The Peninsula Manila proudly unveils three monumental Art Protis works by the late National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, marking a rare presentation of his textile art.
Curated by Ricky Francisco of Fundacíon Sansó, the exhibition showcases never-before-seen large-scale tapestries—Spring VIII (Abstract #84), Spring XII (Abstract #123), and Filipiny (Abstract #124)—in a masterful display of Alcuaz’s innovative approach to the Art Protis technique.
Ranging from 116 x 84 inches to 142 x 88 inches, these vibrant works highlight the artist’s painterly abstraction, fluidity, and “uncluttered playfulness,” brought to life through layers of dyed wool sheets pressed and stitched into canvas.
This exhibit is part of ‘Art in Resonance,’ The Peninsula Hotels’ global contemporary arts initiative launched in 2019. The program champions the cultural richness of each city where The Peninsula stands, offering immersive artistic experiences that transcend borders.
The Art Protis works by the artist will be on display at The Lobby, The Peninsula Manila, from September 2 to 30, 2025. Alongside the main exhibition, a series of engaging events celebrates Alcuaz’s legacy.

Homage to Alcuaz
September 6 and 7, 2025
The Upper Lobby
A special exhibition, curated by Ricky Francisco and organized by Galerie Joaquin and Fundacíon Sansó, showcased over 40 works by emerging and mid-career artists. These pieces paid tribute to Alcuaz through abstract homages, reinterpretations of his iconic Tres Marias, cubist-inspired sculptures, and expressive portraits. This heartfelt homage highlights Alcuaz’s continued influence on contemporary Filipino artists, with many participants being scholars of Fundacíon Sansó and part of its ICArE Program (Initiative for the Continuation of Artist’s Estate).
