At first glance, the idea of translating the works of the Presidential Medal of Merit Award and art master Juvenal Sansó into fashion feels almost intimidating.

Sansó’s paintings have long existed beyond gallery walls, with the maestro himself previously exploring textile and fabric design throughout his career, proving that his visual language could move fluidly between art and fashion.

That history places designer Happy Andrada in the demanding position of continuing an artistic legacy already rich with texture, emotion, and experimentation.

Yet rather than being overshadowed by Sansó’s monumental body of work, Andrada approached the collaboration with enthusiasm and genuine admiration for the artist she was interpreting.

Known for her contemporary Filipiniana and advocacy for indigenous textiles, Andrada has built a reputation for merging local craftsmanship with modern couture.

Over the years, her work has appeared on international runways and celebrity stages, establishing her as one of the country’s leading voices in fashion rooted in Filipino identity.

Presented at Fundación Sansó, “Happy Andrada x Sansó: Art Meets Fashion” transforms some of Sansó’s most recognizable themes into wearable art. The 30-piece collection references everything from the vibrant En Vase florals and Brittany landscapes to the artist’s moody Black Bouquets and abstract cliché verre experiments.

“I love Sansó’s art because of the colors, the layering, and the feeling behind it,” Andrada shared as she professed her love for the maestro and how it matches her style.

That emotional connection became the collection’s greatest strength. The pieces never felt like literal reproductions of paintings applied to garments, but rather extensions of Sansó’s artistic spirit, interpreted through Andrada’s contemporary Filipiniana lens.

Known for championing indigenous textiles and Filipino craftsmanship, Andrada grounded the collaboration in a distinctly local identity through carefully sourced fabrics and artisanal techniques.

The layered textiles, sculptural bib constructions, and tactile surfaces echoed the complexity of Sansó’s brushwork while remaining rooted in Filipino craft traditions.

Andrada described the collection as “fun and quirky,” while remaining deeply connected to Sansó’s artistic language. That sense of playfulness balanced the collection’s visual weight, allowing the garments to feel expressive and alive rather than too serious.

Some of the collection’s strangest moments came from the balance between homage and reinvention.

Beyond aesthetics, the collaboration also carried a deeper purpose. Proceeds from the one-of-one pieces will support the Fundación Sansó Scholarship Program, continuing Sansó’s long-standing support for emerging creatives.

For Andrada, that mission became central to the project itself. “It’s a way of continuing his legacy as a painter and artist who supported local talents,” she explained.

“As an independent designer myself, I think that’s the best way to continue his legacy—by crafting something that merges fashion with art.”

In many ways, “Happy Andrada x Sansó: Art Meets Fashion” succeeds because it understands that legacy is not about imitation. Instead of competing with Sansó’s legacy, Andrada amplified it—allowing the maestro’s works to evolve into something tactile, contemporary, and alive once more.
