As the Philippines gears up to celebrate the 175th anniversary of one of its most enduring institutions, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) offers a captivating glimpse into the intertwined story of legacy and resilience.

“Of Grit and Steel: BPI’s Commitment to Nation-Building,” unveiled by BPI Foundation (BPIF), the social development arm of BPI, is an art exhibit to commemorate the institution’s impressive longevity.

More than an art exhibit, it served as a visual narrative of a country and a company that have grown, struggled, and thrived together for over 174 years. The exhibit features metal artworks from the BPI Art collection, inviting visitors to explore history, art, and culture.

Tribute of strength and resilience

Founded in 1851, BPI holds the distinction of being the country’s first band and the oldest in Southeast Asia. Over the decades, it has evolved far beyond its financial roots to become a trusted partner in Filipino communities nationwide.

Through art and history, Of Grit and Steel: BPI’s Commitment to Nation-Building exhibit tells the story of resilience and heritage.

Through BPI Foundation, it has consistently championed financial inclusion, education, and cultural preservation, aligning commerce with community.

Its story is one of grit, like metal, as curator Kenneth Esguerra noted,  symbolizing an unwavering commitment to uplifting the people it serves.

“More than just an exhibit, Of Grit and Steel: BPI’s Commitment to Nation-Building is a reflection of the Bank’s unwavering commitment to nation-building and its mission to uplift and inspire Filipinos,” said Carmina Marquez, BPIF Executive Director.

Catalyst for change

Through BPFI’s Arts Management Program, the Bank has taken a leading role in preserving and promoting Philippine art and heritage. This initiative provides vital support for artists and culture projects that deepen public engagement and foster a richer understanding of our nation’s identity.

“This annual exhibit, held in partnership with the Ayala Museum, continues to be a platform for BPI’s cultural initiatives, encouraging public engagement and celebrating the richness of Philippine art,” Marquez added.

As the bank approaches to celebrate its 175th milestone, ‘Of Grit and Steel’ serves as a powerful reminder that nation-building is not only measured in economic growth but also in the strength of culture and community.

For those eager to experience this celebration of history, art, and Filipino resilience, the exhibit at the Ayala Museum promises an inspiring encounter, free of charge and open until mid-November.
