In a world where change is the only constant, it becomes crucial to remember our culture and heritage to maintain our identity as Filipinos. Over the years, many have turned to their platforms to celebrate our history.
For Filipino and Baguio-based visual artist James Gabito, his artwork serves as his platform for this very purpose. His paintings of Old Manila are a perfect example, reimagining Filipino visual traditions and highlighting the beauty of our cultural past.
Exploring the Past
Gabito’s love for art began during his student years. He often represented his school in art competitions, but the high cost of art materials prevented him from pursuing his passion seriously.
Everything changed when he started receiving portrait commissions, which allowed him to afford professional art supplies. With this newfound opportunity, Gabito began to explore themes related to regionalism, the environment, and eventually, Philippine mythology—all with the intent of reimagining and preserving the rich cultural assets of the Philippines.
“My art style is diverse because, as an artist, I believe it’s important to master various techniques. I don’t prioritize a specific style; I focus more on the theme or subject matter,” he explained.
This adaptability showcases Gabito’s courageous exploration of different themes and art styles, all in the name of cultural preservation.
Visualizing Old Manila
Gabito’s artworks embody the necessity of upholding Filipino heritage. The pieces bring to life the streets of Manila from days gone by—days that have passed but remain timeless in Gabito’s portrayal. Through his art, he not only captures the beauty of the old city but also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding our cultural traditions.
“With my current works like Old Manila, I want to showcase and take pride in our Filipino culture. As Filipinos, we must strengthen our commitment to our traditional beliefs and customs to keep the essence of what it means to be Filipino alive,” Gabito shared.
Message and Mission
When asked to define art, Gabito stated that it is a force that transcends time, carrying messages that endure despite innovations and changes.
“Art is a force you can’t ignore. It is an argument with a message—one that stands firm and endures through time,” he said.
From the very beginning of his career until now, Gabito has wholeheartedly embraced his responsibility as a Filipino: to protect, preserve, and promote the culture and traditions of his homeland.
