Javier Sartorius Milans del Bosch seemed to have everything. He came from one of Spain’s aristocratic families, was a gifted tennis player, and had a promising future. But behind the privilege was a growing sense that something was missing.

His story is now being told on the big screen in Just Javier, a documentary directed by Josepmaria Anglès that arrives in Philippine cinemas on August 12, 2026.

Javier grew up in Madrid and, during his younger years, immersed himself in the city’s nightlife. His parents sent him and his brother, Fernando, to the United States in the hope that the change of environment would help them find direction.

For Javier, the move became a turning point. While in Los Angeles, he encountered people living on the streets and saw poverty in a way that deeply affected him. The experience forced him to look beyond the comfortable world he had known and question what he wanted to do with his own life.

Instead of pursuing greater wealth or recognition, Javier chose to give up his privileged lifestyle and dedicate himself to missionary work. His journey eventually took him to Cusco, Peru, where he lived among the poor and began a life centered on service, prayer, and simplicity. The experience marked the beginning of a deeper spiritual search. Javier eventually entered a monastery, seeking a life of contemplation and greater closeness to God.

Anglès has said he has always been drawn to stories with universal messages—stories that can speak to people regardless of their culture or religious background, and that explore truth, beauty, and the search for meaning.

Following its Spanish premiere on September 12, 2025, the documentary attracted more than 23,000 moviegoers and remained in cinemas for more than a month. It later expanded to nearly 10 Spanish-speaking countries and has now reached the Philippines.

Just Javier delves into questions that go beyond faith and religion—what gives life meaning and what it means to be truly fulfilled. Through Javier’s transformation, the film encourages viewers to consider where lasting happiness and purpose can really be found.
