Classrooms are where children learn the basics that help them move up the academic ladder. But what happens when the learning environment and the curriculum are not enough to address the growing reading, numeracy, and overall literacy crisis?

Behind the rising statistics lies a troubling reality that mirrors the struggles of many Filipino students to read. When reading becomes a challenge, every other subject also becomes harder to understand and comprehend.

For Lampara Books, this situation must be addressed now more than ever, calling for urgent action and solutions.

“The crisis is deeply concerning—tragic, even. It feels like a battle we must urgently confront. The future of our nation is at stake. Our children represent the future: the leaders, the innovators, the ones who will shape the world. Their capacity to read and think critically will be the deciding factor in our nation’s progress,” said Lampara Books CEO Segundo Matias Jr.

To answer that call, Lampara Books launched its first-quarter 2026 collection of advocacy-driven learning materials designed to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills among Filipino students. The collection aims to support both schools and homes in making reading and mathematics more effective tools for learning.

The publishing house worked closely with respected literacy advocates, illustrators, and authors such as Victor Villanueva, Daisy Jane Calado, Eugene Y. Evasco, and Genaro R. Gojo Cruz. Their collaboration ensures that the books meet strong educational standards while keeping stories engaging and meaningful for young readers.

At the heart of many titles are proven reading strategies such as the Marungko Approach and Systematic Phonics; methods that help children connect sounds and letters while learning to decode and understand texts.

Yet Lampara’s mission goes beyond academics. This initiative recognizes that reading and numeracy are part of everyday life, helping young learners see that these are not just classroom subjects but practical skills they can use in the real world.

Equally important is cultural connection. Many of the books weave Filipino language, stories, and lived experiences into their lessons, allowing children to recognize themselves in what they read while building skills that open doors to global opportunities.

For Lampara Books, the goal is simple yet urgent: to bring quality learning materials to every child, wherever they are in the country.

Because in the fight against the reading and literacy crisis, every book can be a beginning, and every young reader is a future waiting to unfold.
