Go Big or Go Home with the BRAVIA 3 II

Sony’s BRAVIA 3 II 100-inch turns your at-home comforts of movie nights, game days, and weekend viewing into something considerably more cinematic.

Watching at home has always been a little domestic negotiation: the movie playing, the snacks within reach, everyone plopping down into the sofa’s assorted compromises—while the spectacle, all pomp and circumstance, is left scavenging for grandeur among the coffee table, throw pillows, and other fixtures of an ordinary night in.

Sony’s BRAVIA 3 II 100-inch makes a persuasive case for putting that compromise to rest, bringing such cinema-sized heft into the domestic sphere as to put paid to the usual household negotiations.

At a towering 100 inches, its display does more than make the action bigger; it puts the room itself slightly out of joint, altering the scale by which its distances are more experienced before the eye.

A blockbuster stretches itself across the space; a football match shrugs off its confinement to the pane, and even the most ordinary episode of a favorite series comes swaggering into view with a newfound gravity sufficient to make the commonplace seem rather grand.

That scale, of course, would amount to little more than a peacock’s display were it not for the processing architecture working behind the scenes.

Much of the heavy lifting falls to Sony’s 4K Processor X1, not least insofar as it brings the picture’s smaller details forward to keep its clarity and light-dark balance from going astray.

Alongside it, 4K X-Reality PRO pulls lower-resolution footage up to speed on the fly, while Live Colour Technology lends each frame a more vivid cast, lest all the colors run roughshod over realism.

Dynamic Contrast Enhancer rounds out the picture, minding the uneasy truce between light and shadow, where the image is lent depth and heft, all while steering clear of a brighter, louder wash of brightness.

It is the sort of distinction that starts making a fuss at 100 inches: crowded action scenes gain enough breathing room to keep pixelated bedlam at bay.

Then comes the other half of the equation: audio. 

Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos give the BRAVIA 3 II a way to match visual depth with spatial sound, the picture taking the gaze into its keeping even as the acoustics fill in around it to maintain image and sound in seamless accord.
