With a promise to challenge perception, Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea unveils its newest exhibition with curated selections from Filipino artists–present and emerging. This series of exhibitions highlights the intricate connection between meditation and transformation, emphasizing the duality inherent in art.
the art of being still
This highlights the Japanese philosophy of Yutori, promoting spaciousness and the conscious appeal to reflection, balance, and renewal.
With works from Bea Aspiras, Andre Baldovino, Naomi Banal, Benjie Cabangis, Arley Carig, J Consunji, Allain Hablo, Niño Hernandez, Josef Laureano, Rico Lascano, Coeli Manese, Red Mansueto, Aaron Virata Mempin, Poch Naval, Enzo Peralta, Pey Raymond, Kristian Somera, and Vettina Villarica, the exhibition suggest a boundless calm through delicate colors, organic movement, and restrained composition.
Between Starshine and Clay III
Through needlework and textiles, “Between Starshine and Clay III” redefines feminine resistance through art by reclaiming notions of purity, modesty, and domestic labor, challenging the extensions of traditional femininity.
Stitch by stitch, Margaux Blas, Aubrey Caabay, Shireen Co, Sarah Conanan, Olivia d'Aboville, Corinne Fernandez Garcia, ND Harn, Len-Len x Yllang Montenegro, Celline Mercado, Isha Naguiat, Tekla Tamoria, and Ja Turla unravel spectacular needlework as an evolving medium for defiance and identity.
Banyuhay
Through Alfred Capiral’s latest exhibition, light takes center stage–illumination piercing through darkness, embodying guidance against uncertainty. Capiral’s pieces capture vibrancy, luminance, and serenity, with layers of colors and textures signaling hope and transition.
Liwanag also stands as an affirmation; constantly moving towards the light, renewal, and dreams that lie ahead.
proDUCT
Distinct from the trio of unique minds—Isobel Francisco, DengCoy Miel, and Jose Tence Ruiz—proDUCT offers more than just a visceral, thought-provoking experience. It challenges the notion of “The Artist” as simultaneously “The Product,” turning this concept on its head.
An amalgamation of diverse, creative thoughts, the three interpreted the prompt of “proDUCT” with a strong individual defiance: Isobel Francisco on art as “not only transactional but deeply existential;” DengCoy Miel dabbling in “self-realization imbued with transcendent reflexivity;” while Jose Tence Ruiz approaches with a journalistic call-out and a grim lens on history.
MOTHER AND CHILD
Noel Elicana’s solo exhibition is a fresh perspective in framing maternity as a representation of artistic expression. Mythological manifestations as matriarchal figures, Elicana’s bestiary imagery, imbued with sharp, bold motifs and colors, provokes the poignant role of motherhood in Filipino culture, all the while maintaining its sentimentality. “Mother and Child” is also a love letter to Elicano’s Illonggo sensibility, promoting the region’s aesthetic to the mainstream.
Altro Mondo’s series of exhibitions will be held at the Altro Mondo Creative Space at 1159 Chino Roces Avenue in Makati City. The exhibitions will be open until April 25, 2025.
