The 25th edition of Liste Art Fair Basel will take place with a shorter duration from Thursday, 17 September to Sunday, 20 September 2020. This year 49 galleries from 32 countries will present the latest positions in contemporary art at Dreispitzhalle in cooperation with Kunsthaus Baselland and in close proximity to the Schaulager, Art Institut HGK FHNW and our long-standing special guest HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel).
Over the course of many discussions with the galleries involved and Liste’s partners, the desire to physically show art again and to connect through direct exchanges has become clear. A majority of the galleries originally selected to participate in Liste 2020 have decided to commit to our new date and location, with the awareness that visiting Liste will probably only be possible for a local and primarily European audience. However, galleries that cannot be physically present due to travel restrictions will still have the opportunity to present their artists: Liste is introducing a host/guest model wherein galleries at the fair will show works by their own artists as well as works by artists of galleries that are unable to travel to Basel.
Safety measures and new location
The safety and health of all visitors, exhibitors and team members is of the highest priority for Liste. When it comes to holding the event, all official health and precautionary recommendations will be followed. The situation in Switzerland has stabilised and the Swiss Federal Council further relaxed measures to contain the coronavirus on 19 June (for example, events of 300 people are now allowed). As these conditions are favourable to Liste and its size, we will be able to follow necessary safety protocols and thus carry out the fair.
In order to be able to implement the necessary safety measures in the best possible way, for the first time since its foundation, Liste will not take place at Werkraum Warteck pp, but rather at Dreispitzhalle, which is within the Campus of Arts, a centre for creativity and artistic practices. The hall, which will be the future location of Kunsthaus Baselland, is characterised by spaciousness—something that is crucial in these times.
The safety protocol that they will develop for this location will be based on the specifications given by the Swiss Federal Council and the Canton of Basel-Stadt and will be published in mid-August. Should there be any changes, Liste will inform you immediately.
In addition to the fair, they will launch a new initiative, Liste Showtime, in September. This is both an online platform for the galleries, where they can present an artist from their programme in detail and offer works for sale, and a collaborative artist project in which artists selected by the galleries will address the theme “Rewriting Our Imaginations” in the form of a poster. The posters will be exhibited and sold in a web shop on the new Liste Showtime website. Detailed information about Liste Showtime will follow soon.
Further exhibitions in Basel
In a new cooperation between Basel’s museums, art institutions, galleries and fairs, top-notch exhibitions will be on view along with a programme of special events from 17–20 September, allowing for diverse and outstanding art experiences during a visit to Basel at this time.
Without the support of their many partners, the implementation of Liste Art Fair Basel would not have been possible in this exceptional year. They would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kunsthaus Baselland for generously offering their space as well as the Werkraum Warteck pp for supporting our change of location with a great deal of understanding.
They would also like to express their sincere gratitude to their long-standing main partner E. Gutzwiller & Cie, Banquiers, who has always stood by their side, including in these turbulent and challenging times, as well as to the Foundation for the Promotion of Contemporary Art in Basel, which has made a donation to support the production of new artworks for Liste, thus directly supporting our galleries’ young artists. They would like to thank Helvetia Versicherungen for returning as a partner of Liste this year and for presenting their prize winner at the fair. They would also like to thank the Eckenstein-Geigy Foundation and all the members of Friends of Liste, whose contributions will directly benefit all to their galleries this year. All of these commitments honour and provide meaningful support to young galleries and their dedication to art in these uncertain times.
Since 1997, E. Gutzwiller & Cie, Banquiers, Basel has been the main partner of Liste Art Fair Basel. With their generous commitment, they enable favourable conditions for the galleries.
