Due to advancements and innovation, people are now facing a wide range of environmental challenges that negatively impact the natural world, creating an urgent need for sustainable solutions. In response, Sony has launched an initiative aimed at reducing its environmental footprint to zero by 2050.

While Sony has already halved its carbon footprint since 2010, the company remains committed to fulfilling its environmental responsibilities. Through a long-term environmental plan, Sony aims to protect both society’s well-being and the planet’s health by integrating ethical practices and developing innovative green technologies.

Going green for future generations

The “Material-to-Material Recycling” initiative involves recovering materials from used products and repurposing them as raw materials for new TV products. Sony will integrate these recycled materials into SORPLAS, a flame-retardant, sustainable recycled plastic used in the production of their TVs. This innovative practice will debut in the 65-inch model of the 4K OLED BRAVIA 8.

Despite challenges in producing the rear cover due to the variety of plastics and differences in strength and texture, Sony has overcome this obstacle by partnering with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, the developer of SORPLAS. Together, they’ve developed advanced sorting technology and optimized material blending methods, ensuring that the recycled materials meet the high-quality standards expected from Sony products. Global shipments of the BRAVIA 8 are set to begin this year.

Looking ahead, Sony’s ultimate goal is to achieve fully circular recycling through a “closed-loop” system, where rear covers made from SORPLAS are recovered and reused, further advancing their commitment to sustainability.
