Globally, waste is a growing issue, especially plastics. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), 19 million to 23 million tons of plastic waste are being dumped in the oceans every year. In the Philippines alone, the growing plastic pollution poses a major challenge in achieving the zero waste goal.
But in recent years, the government, in partnership with companies and manufacturers including Coca-Cola Philippines, has made impactful steps to counter this issue. This year, Coca-Cola Philippines released ‘Coke Bins and Benches,’ a newly-installed recycling project in partnership with the Bonifacio Global City (BGC).
Made from recycled materials, these bins and benches are placed across 20 areas inside BGC, ultimately bringing recycling nearer and more accessible to everyone—a strong start for wise waste management.
This combination of bins beside the benches allows the integration of recycling into daily routines. As you sit and rest at the benches, you can also drop off your PET bottles at the bins beside them. Afterwards, all collected bottles will be picked up by BGC and delivered to a recycling facility where they will be given a new life through repurposing.
Coke Bins and Benches is a useful and aesthetically pleasing example of how recycling can turn into an actual and functional public space. More repurposed plastic items means less plastic in the ocean.
Through this latest project, Coca-Cola Philippines continues to uphold its commitment to foster proper PET bottle disposal, encourage responsible recycling habits, increase bottle recovery, and ultimately reduce plastic in the long run.
Indeed, it is a cycle to refresh, recycle, and repeat.
