Stories are all around us. Every pavement holds its own history, waiting to be uncovered through observation and engagement. This is the message that “Makati in Chrome, etc.” seeks to amplify and revitalize.

During a memorable typewalk, a fresh perspective on Makati emerged as Novice and Type63 hosted the second edition of “Makati in Chrome, etc.” on October 19, uniting art enthusiasts, type designers, and the public.

The Invisible Gems

On a typical day, these typefaces may seem like mere labels adorning the streets and buildings of Makati. However, the typewalk brought to light these often-overlooked designs, which serve as cultural markers for various establishments along Makati Avenue to Amorsolo.

Due to popular demand, the event featured two sessions—morning and afternoon—allowing participants to explore the streets of Makati. Notable typefaces highlighted during the walk included the striking golden sign at the Atrium of Makati, the elegant logo of The Ritz, and the Escolta signage at the Manila Peninsula, among others.

Glimpses of Stories

The typewalk offered participants a glimpse into the narratives behind these letterings and designs, unveiling new facts and rich histories tied to the streets of Makati City.

According to Type63 founder and type designer Jo Malinis, many people overlook the historical and contextual significance of typefaces in their everyday environment, though interest in typography is on the rise.

“I initially thought this activity would appeal only to a niche audience of type designers, but I’ve been proven wrong. It’s been incredible to connect with people from all walks of life who share a curiosity about these hidden—and often ‘invisible’—gems,” said Malinis.

As participants walked the pavements of Makati, they uncovered stories behind the designs that will linger long after the event.

A Typewalk to Remember

This was truly a typewalk to remember. Participants learned to appreciate the design and typography that surround them, realizing that there is always more beneath the surface.

Makati in Chrome, etc. 2 not only fostered an appreciation for art and design but also illuminated the rich history of each location and the significance behind every typographic choice.
