RSVP by Newport World Resorts recently championed the local comedy scene with a memorable installment of its event series. Laughter and joy filled the room as SPIT Manila took the stage for an unforgettable performance.
Newport World Resorts is committed to elevating the local arts scene within the context of modern celebrations. The name RSVP, commonly understood as a request for responses to invitations, also stands for “Répondez s'il vous plait” in French, meaning “Please Reply” in English.
Dedicated to celebrating the rich cultures and experiences found in music, visual arts, and performing arts, RSVP creates spaces where these communities can thrive and showcase their cultural brilliance.
Held at El Calle Food & Music Hall in Newport Mall, “Gags for Days!” was the second event in their series, focusing on comedy. Stand-up performances by Rae Mammuad and Issa Villaverde of Comedy Manila warmed up the audience with their relatable humor drawn from personal experiences, effortlessly eliciting smiles.
As the atmosphere buzzed with energy, SPIT Manila, the featured performers, took the night to new heights with their improv theater. This theatrical art form, which thrives on spontaneity and audience interaction, unfolded without any scripted material, allowing for a truly dynamic experience.
Throughout the evening, the group showcased their talent across six interactive games. No matter what word, phrase, or question the audience provided, SPIT Manila responded with quick-witted lines that sparked laughter. Their skill even extended to singing, as they harmonized beautifully in a tribute to El Calle, creating a song based on the audience’s responses to prompts about what can be found on the streets.
Classic games like “Eh ‘Di” and “Oracle” further highlighted their quick thinking and comedic genius, demonstrating their ability to maintain momentum without losing the audience’s engagement.
SPIT Manila exemplified the essence of a premier improv theater group, and it’s no surprise they are a go-to name in the local comedy scene. Through the platform created by RSVP, there is hope for greater appreciation, recognition, and representation of the diverse forms of Filipino art, creativity, and culture.
