Kate Contemporary, a dynamic art space, was conceptualized in 2023 with the aim of filling a significant gap in the European art market. Recognizing the lack of visibility, promotion, and knowledge of Asian art in Europe, the founders of Kate Contemporary chose Madrid as the ideal location to launch the gallery. The city, with its rich cultural history, was seen as the perfect place to showcase and bring attention to the diverse world of contemporary Asian art.
According to Mia Marchadesch, Director for International Operations, “The mission and vision of Kate Contemporary involves being a hub for contemporary Asian and International art in Europe, providing a platform for related artists to be seen and heard in Europe. Additionally, Kate Contemporary is here to collaborate with and be a bridge for other galleries that want to be under the European spotlight.”
Through this, Kate Contemporary is not only creating a space for dialogue and exchange, but also seeking to help Asian artists launch their careers in Europe and introduce European artists to new opportunities in Asia.
One of the key goals of Kate Contemporary is to introduce Filipino artists to the Spanish art market. The gallery achieves this by hosting events such as exhibition openings, artist receptions, and collaborations with other European artists. By building strong networks and partnerships, Kate Contemporary is able to showcase the talents of Filipino artists within the vibrant art scene of Spain. The gallery plans to expand its efforts by joining international art fairs and hosting art talks and community events to further connect Asian and European art.
Interestingly, both Spanish and Filipino artistic traditions have roots in European techniques, with many Filipino artists honing their craft under the influence of Spanish art education. Themes of societal struggle, oppression, and the quest for freedom are common threads that run through many impactful works of art from both cultures. These shared experiences create a natural connection between Spanish audiences and Filipino artworks.
Moreover, the gallery aims to honor and build upon the legacy of renowned Filipino artists like Juan Luna and Felix Resurección Hidalgo, who studied in Madrid and achieved international acclaim. By continuing their work and introducing new Filipino and Asian artists to the European stage, Kate Contemporary hopes to further strengthen the cultural ties between Spain and the Philippines and build a new legacy for contemporary art.
The public reception of Kate Contemporary has been positive. “People are curious and excited for points of view that add diversity, this reflects upon the fact that Europe is a grand melting pot of diversity in itself,” adds Marchadesch. The mix of different artistic traditions and backgrounds contributes to a dynamic, vibrant art scene.
Since its official launch in March 2024, Kate Contemporary has already garnered attention with an array of successful exhibitions. Notable shows include two solo exhibitions featuring Mr. S and Pat Frades, a solo show for Marc Aran Reyes, as well as group exhibitions featuring artists from Art Underground and Village Art Gallery, including Jr Saycon, Arnold Lalongisip, GNCH, AR Manalo, and Arce. The gallery has also worked with Galerie Stephanie to showcase artists like Vincent De Pio, Aileen Lanuza, Imam Santoso, Jomike Tejido, Haraya Tejido, and Gabby Prado.
One of the gallery’s own curated shows was a two-man solo show featuring Spanish artist Laura Hernández Pérez and a Philippine artist based in Singapore, Quiban. Closing out 2024, the gallery has an abstraction group show featuring artists from the UK, Spain, the Philippines, and Thailand, such as Reggie Baxter, David Kauffman, Martin Crawford, and Areeya Pornsiriviwat.
Kate Contemporary also made its debut at Art Shopping Paris at the Carrousel du Louvre in October 2024. This participation was a significant milestone, marking the gallery’s increasing presence on the international art stage.
Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, Kate Contemporary has an exciting calendar of exhibitions and events lined up. The gallery will continue to feature artists from Asia, particularly the Philippines, while also spotlighting local artists from Spain and other parts of Europe. This ongoing collaboration aims to foster greater understanding between cultures.
