Prepare to be captivated as the Mondrian Hong Kong hosts an evocative rooftop showcase that transcends the boundaries of traditional art. On the evening of November 22, 2024, the luxury lifestyle hotel will become a stage for one of Japan’s most intimate and visually arresting art forms: shibari. Renowned shibari artist Hajime Kinoko, whose work has garnered global attention, will bring the centuries-old Japanese rope art to life through an exclusive performance titled "Beauty by Hajime Kinoko."

Set against the breathtaking nightscape of Victoria Harbour, Kinoko's shibari art isn’t simply a performance—it’s an experience, interweaving beauty, trust, and human connection through intricate rope work that delicately binds the body. Originating as an artistic meditation, shibari’s evocative visuals and emotional depth have elevated it to an enthralling form of human sculpture. For Kinoko, who views his work as a blend of physical discipline and creative expression, the rooftop of Mondrian Hong Kong offers a fitting platform to share this sensory journey with an international audience.

The evening, curated by the innovative cultural collective MeART, is designed to immerse guests in a dialogue between body, emotion, and artistry. With the theme "The Shibari Connection: Love, Lust, and Beauty," the showcase is divided into three performances that celebrate the essence of human connection. Alongside Kinoko, local artists Nawa Shishi and Steve Freeman will each present their unique interpretations of this art form, fusing shibari with other disciplines to explore the multifaceted nature of intimacy.

Beauty by Hajime Kinoko

Kinoko’s work has a mystical quality, revealing beauty through a dance between tension and release, vulnerability and strength. His distinctive style involves bamboo and rope to create a striking silhouette—a performance art that’s both captivating and reverent. With Hong Kong’s skyline glimmering in the background, his rope art embodies a profound sensitivity to body, mind, and soul, crafted meticulously to leave a lasting impression on every guest.

Love by Nawa Shishi

A celebrated figure in Hong Kong’s shibari scene, Nawa Shishi’s approach merges tradition with contemporary technique. Working with acclaimed calligrapher Merryislovely, his segment will celebrate love’s gentle, synchronizing essence. The fluidity of rope and ink, united on stage, seeks to convey the harmony of love through an interpretive performance that is as much an embrace as it is art.

Lust by Steve Freeman

Freeman’s work delves into the visceral allure of shibari, exploring lust not as a fleeting desire, but as a complex, respectful acknowledgment of human form and spirit. His expressive, almost painterly approach captures longing, admiration, and the sacred nature of trust that binds artist and subject. Freeman’s work is a statement on passion, a delicate dance between intensity and respect.

"Bringing shibari to Hong Kong in such a culturally rich venue is a dream come true," says Hajime Kinoko. "I’m thrilled to collaborate with MeART, as well as with the talented local artists Nawa Shishi and Steve Freeman. I hope that our audience will find our performances moving and reflective of the universal themes of love, lust, and beauty."
