LAKAT stands as a beacon of innovation, because of their sustainability and design efforts. Since its inception, the brand has woven a narrative deeply rooted in environmental consciousness and local craftsmanship. LAKAT's DNA, carefully intertwined with the efforts of Kabankalan weaving communities, pineapple farmers, family-run rubber farms, and local shoemakers, culminates in their iconic sneakers made from pineapple cotton fibers. This journey toward sustainable fashion is guided by the expertise of the DOST-PTRI, reinforcing LAKAT’s dedication to creating products that honor both people and the planet.

In 2023, LAKAT's vision of sustainability aligned perfectly with that of renowned design duo Nazareno/Lichauco (N/L). The collaboration came to life when CITEM/FAME selected N/L to lead the Fashion Sector of the Design Commune Program. For LAKAT founders Michael and Banj Claparols, this was a match made in design heaven. “We grabbed the opportunity immediately,” Michael recalls. “N/L’s high level of design, coupled with their commitment to sustainable development goals and innovation, made them the perfect collaborators.”

Here are the five key things you need to know about their exciting new collaboration:

A Vision of Sustainability

LAKAT’s ethos has always been about creating sustainable fashion rooted in local craftsmanship. From pineapple farmers in Negros to family-run rubber farms and shoemakers, LAKAT has developed a robust supply chain to ensure their products are as eco-conscious as possible. Their iconic sneakers, made with pineapple cotton fibers, are a testament to their commitment to green innovation.

Nazareno/Lichauco’s Design Mastery

When CITEM/FAME selected Nazareno/Lichauco to lead the Fashion Sector of the Design Commune Program, LAKAT knew it was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. The design duo’s high-level aesthetic and alignment with sustainable goals made them the perfect match. As Michael Claparols of LAKAT shared, “Their vision and values align with ours, especially regarding sustainable development goals and innovative design.”

Inspiration from Nature and Wellness

Nazareno/Lichauco drew inspiration from nature and utilitarianism for their designs, seeking to reconnect with a simpler, more natural way of life. Their collection for LAKAT explores the idea of finding happiness and wellness through functionality—an ideal rooted in utilitarian philosophy. The collection is all about creating something that is both beautiful and practical.

A Year in the Making

Creating the LAKAT x Nazareno/Lichauco collection took time—three months for the first prototypes, and a full year to finalize the designs and make them commercially viable. The eight styles in the collection feature color blocking with earthy tones alongside vibrant reds, pinks, and purples. The use of azo-free dyes and Philippine tropical fibers is a conscious choice to ensure the products are both eco-friendly and fashion-forward.

Debuting at ArteFino Fair 2024

This highly anticipated collection will make its debut at ArteFino Fair 2024, from August 22 to 25 at The Fifth at Rockwell. The collection reflects LAKAT’s mission to promote sustainability through streetwear, allowing consumers to feel good about their fashion choices while contributing to environmental conservation.
