If you open a newspaper or scroll through your social media feed today, you will often be greeted by a barrage of heavy headlines. It often feels as though the world is viewed through a dark lens, dominated by conflict, struggle, and uncertainty.

Yet, beneath the noise of a complicated world, we can look at things in an entirely different perspective.

Maybe it’s in the soft smile of a jeepney driver who has taped his child’s graduation picture proudly onto his dashboard, sharing his greatest victory with every passenger who boards. Or it could also be in the collective sweat of neighbors coming together to nail down the final roofing sheets of a family's hard-earned home.

These are the unseen, untelevised milestones of the Filipino people. They are not marked by grand stage decorations or massive city festivals, but they carry the immense weight of our nation’s soul.

On May 25, at the JTI Collaboration Hub, JTI Philippines officially commenced its fourth annual SinagLarawan National Photo Contest under a theme that serves as a beautiful, necessary disruption to modern cynicism: “Pagbubunyi” (Jubilation).

What is Pagbubunyi?

When we think of the word “pagbubunyi,” our minds naturally drift toward the spectacular—fireworks illuminating the night sky, massive crowds cheering in a stadium, or a gold medal held high under stage lights.

But this year, SinagLarawan is challenging Filipino photographers from all over the country to look closer, shift their focus, and redefine what it means to celebrate.

The initiative actively invites visual storytellers to capture moments of pride, support, and shared joy as they naturally occur in ordinary life. It is an exploration of the small, personal milestones and spontaneous acts of kindness that form the bedrock of our communities.

Pagbubunyi can be seen in everyday triumphs, in jubilant moments that we quietly celebrate but joyfully share with each other,” explained Richard Arboleda, JTI Philippines Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Director, during the Manila launch.

By shifting the spotlight away from formal occasions, the competition honors the absolute essence of bayanihan—like strangers pausing their busy routines to help a stranded driver in need on a congested road.

Sarok Weaving Through Generations

This thematic focus stems from a deep appreciation of how the Filipino people navigate life's challenges. Faith Mondejar, JTI Philippines Community Investment Manager, elaborated on this intentional direction during the launch.

“We wanted to focus on a subject matter that was joyful. We wanted to underline that these characteristics do not wait for grand celebrations but can be seen in everyday moments. The feeling of triumph springs even from the simplest things, simplest moments.”

Mondejar’s words remind us that these everyday images are not merely happy accidents; they are hard-won realities.

“We believe that behind every success lies hours of labor and years of sacrifice—fueled by our persistent, defiant, and hopeful outlook in life.”

What the Photograph Means to the Photographer

This year, SinagLarawan has transformed from a traditional corporate initiative into a vital, expansive national platform. It serves as a living archive that gathers diverse visual stories from various regions across the archipelago, showcasing a Filipino culture that is inherently multifaceted and multicultural.

Past iterations of the contest have beautifully documented how Filipinos across different regional landscapes express optimism, resilience, and human connection in uniquely distinct ways.

The judges of SinagLarawan 2026 are issuing a distinct call for creative clarity.  In a world increasingly saturated with heavily edited, staged, and filtered imagery, they are searching for truth rather than mere technical perfection.

Artu Nepomuceno, one of the distinguished judges on the panel, stated, “I’m looking immediately at the authenticity of the photographs, the intention of taking those photographs, what it means to you more than what it means to the competition.”

Led by a passionate organizing team—including Corporate Affairs and Communications Director Shaiful Bahari Mahpar, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Director Richard Arboleda, Community Investment Manager Faith Mondejar, and SinagLarawan Head Judge Veejay Villafranca—the competition champions photography as a transformative, living art form.

“With SinagLarawan, we are highlighting photography as an art form that enriches life, serving as a source of inspiration and a medium that shapes collective experiences and shared values,” stated Shaiful Bahari Mahpar.

It is an intentional effort to preserve the exact traits, values, and traditions that shape the modern Filipino identity, proving that even when facing adversity, there remain beautiful, undeniable moments for Filipinos to feel proud of.

Committed to Building a Better Future

To ensure that this call to creative arms reaches every corner of the country, SinagLarawan’s campaign will embark on regional roadshows in Iloilo City and Cagayan de Oro City.

These roadshows are specifically designed to directly engage local photography communities, foster collaboration among regional photo clubs, and encourage a broad, diverse wave of participation from Luzon to Mindanao.

The ultimate title of Grand Winner - SinagLarawan of the Year comes with a trophy, a ₱150,000 cash prize, and a ₱30,000 photo club reward with a certificate. This is followed by the 1st Runner-Up, who will receive a trophy, ₱120,000 in cash, and a ₱25,000 photo club reward, while the 2nd Runner-Up takes home a trophy, ₱100,000, and a ₱20,000 photo club incentive.

Maninisid ng Tahong

The distinction extends to eight Circle of Excellence winners, who will each be awarded a trophy alongside ₱80,000 in cash and a ₱10,000 photo club bonus. Additionally, thirteen Special Awards—encompassing the Rehiyon Awards for Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, alongside the JTI Employee Choice Award—will grant ₱50,000 each to the winners and a certificate for their respective clubs. Finally, seventy-six Finalists will be recognized with ₱10,000 each and an e-certificate for their photo clubs.

Beyond the immediate financial rewards, the contest offers an enduring legacy. All of the top 100 winning photographs will be immortalized and published within the pages of the official SinagLarawan photobook.

Furthermore, the major prize winners—who will be revealed during a special photo exhibit and awards ceremony in October—will have their works featured in JTI’s prestigious 2027 corporate calendar.

Following in the footsteps of previous visionaries, such as last year’s grand winner, Kurt Austin Garcia, these photographers will see their fleeting snapshots transformed into lasting symbols of cultural pride.

The competition is open to all members of established photography clubs, as well as independent photographers who are officially endorsed by a photo club, and are 18 years of age or older.

To keep the content contemporary and reflective of our current cultural moment, only digital photographs taken between January 2024 and July 2026 will be accepted. Each participant is permitted to submit one single, high-impact entry.

The submission window is officially open, and entries will be accepted through the official website, jtisinaglarawan.com, until August 10, 2026.

Each digital submission must be accompanied by a title, a brief English description explaining how the image manifests the theme of Pagbubunyi, and the exact location where the photograph was captured.

This initiative is less about the competition itself and more about the collective future we choose to look toward. It is a reminder that our communal victories—fueled by a heartfelt desire to see our fellow kababayans succeed—are worth documenting.

As Shaiful Bahari Mahpar aptly concluded during the launch: “We remain committed to building a better future in everything that we do.”

Through SinagLarawan 2026, that better future is being meticulously framed, one simple, triumphant, and beautiful moment at a time.
