Known as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines, Marikina holds a rich legacy of shoemaking. Its reputation for high-quality, handcrafted leather shoes began in 1887, when Laureano “Kapitan Moy” Guevarra established the first shoe workshop in the area.

However, the 1980s brought trade liberalization and the onset of globalization, which slowed down the local industry. Over the years, the livelihoods of Marikina shoemakers have also been impacted by destructive tropical storms and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response, various initiatives have emerged to help revive the industry, one of which is Artesano’s “Sapahisturismo,” a program that bridges the gap between modern markets and Marikina shoemakers. By supporting locally made footwear, we also help breathe new life into a once-thriving craft tradition.

Posh Pocket Shoes

Founded in 2010, Posh Pocket celebrates Filipino craftsmanship with shoes handcrafted by Marikina artisans. The brand’s workshop has faced repeated setbacks from typhoon floods, and during the pandemic, their team shrank from 25 to just 5. Now, Posh Pocket is making a comeback with stylish Mary Jane and prima ballerina flats. This lace-up design, in particular, adds the perfect pop of color to any outfit.

Una PH

Una PH adds a unique twist to classic Mary Jane shoes with detailed broguing and an adjustable velcro strap for convenience. Finished with slip-resistant rubber soles, this eye-catching pair offers both style and comfort.

Zapateria

The Leonor pump, inspired by the weave of a bayong, exudes power and confidence. Debuted at the ArteFino 2019 Festival, it’s an exclusive design by Master Shoemaker Rico Sta. Ana for his “Mok-mok” collection. Featuring genuine leather soles secured by “mok-mok” (skin stitching), a traditional Marikina technique, this piece showcases the craftsmanship of the region. Zapateria also offers footwear design workshops, passing on Marikina’s shoemaking legacy to aspiring artisans.

Marikina’s shoemaking heritage continues to thrive through brands like Posh Pocket and initiatives like Zapateria’s workshops. Supporting these artisans helps preserve the city’s cultural legacy as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines.
