“On the Rocks”, “Chapter 1” exhibits at Space Encounters Gallery
Space Encounters Gallery rings the new year with exhibits that set the tone for its exciting 2020 lineup. Headlining the shows this January is Hersley Casero’s On the Rocks. This solo exhibit is staged back-to-back with Chapter 1, a group show featuring Arvin Santos, Faye Mandi, Jan Sunday, and Nikko Pelaez.
Hersley Casero’s On the Rocks is an extension of The Wishing Rocks exhibit he held at California during his stay at the Chalk Hill Artist Residency in September 2019. Casero is the first Filipino to have been sponsored a place at the said creative establishment. Spurred by the desire to pay homage to these seemingly trivial objects, Casero took inspiration from the centuries-old geological history of the formation of the Warnecke Ranch and Vineyards, where Chalk Hill Artist Residency is housed. His keen attention to detail, his deftness, and his discipline are clearly demonstrated in this series. Every minute aspect of the rocks is illustrated using only a 7B pencil. And being the multidisciplinary artist that he is, Casero also delves into ceramic installation pieces that serve as an extension of his drawings. On the surface, On the Rocks is a love letter to a simple organic matter; but as one takes time to scrutinize every shadow and experience such tactile sensation, one thing becomes evident: that Casero’s latest solo show is a delicate dialogue between the artist, his subject, and the audience.
The gallery also presents its first group show of the year aptly titled Chapter 1. Five young artists take center stage to define the concept of a fresh start, of rewriting a story and seeing new perspectives. Arvin Santos, with his quirky abstractions, posits that art is not just confined on the canvas, but can also be interpreted using toys. Then there’s Don Pascua’s intricately layered resin and matboard creations, which chronicle his travels to the country’s mountainous regions. Meanwhile, Faye Mandi reinterprets mundane objects, like eggshells, and assigns new meanings to them. On the other hand, Jan Sunday goes back to her roots as she showcases the medium she first fell in love with: double exposed, black-and-white abstract photography zeroing in on the female body.
Rounding up the group exhibit is Nikko Pelaez, who aims to commence the year on a high note by showcasing the signature eye-catching colors of his geometric portraits. Pelaez won the Vans Asia Custom Culture 2018 contest and has since been busy collaborating with the popular American shoe brand.
On the Rocks and Chapter 1 opens on January 16, 2020 at 6pm.
