Butch Payawal’s “Sleep Beneath My Beautiful”
By: Francis G. Pallarco
In this day and age, is it still possible to discern what is beautiful?
First of all, beautiful is highly subjective making it a contradiction of sorts.
What I find beautiful, one might find ugly, and vice versa.
Is something beautiful nothing more than a function then, converted into form?
So many theories and questions, but no exact definition or explanation exists.
Sadly, it is mostly distorted, misunderstood and only leaves a confusing trail of conflicting ideas.
Conflicting ideas that will heighten your imagination regarding what is beautiful in its varied forms. This is what noted artist Butch Payawal is aiming for in his latest series of art works aptly titled, “Sleep Beneath My Beautiful”. A collection of artworks offering a fresh visual perspective on what is truly beautiful as he explains, “Sometimes beautiful can mean a lot like…beautiful dreams, beautiful animals, beautiful moments, beautiful scenery and more that are worthy of being perceived as beautiful.”
But in the end what is truly beautiful?
Images of beautiful landscapes, sounds of nature and the face of a renowned actress seem to be the most common concept of the word.
But it shouldn’t be limited to such basic notions because what is truly beautiful must be something much bigger and have a deeper meaning
Just like a visually beautiful art piece that would mean nothing if one fails to recognize the artist’s beautiful skill.
A beautiful skill that has successfully portrayed the artist’s most profound intended emotions and concepts.
The visual depiction can be pretty and bright, dark and sinister or even a combination of both elements at the same time.
Whatever it may be and depending on one’s perspective, there’s always something beautiful to be found in the most unexpected form, shape or object.
Who knows, it just might be what we have all been striving for to give meaning towards our worldly existence
