As the iconic production of Miss Saigon returns to Manila, its significance to Filipinos remains profound as the launching pad of our very own Lea Salonga, who brought pride to the Philippines through her Tony Award-winning performance as the original Kim in the musical’s West End debut. Miss Saigon was last staged in Manila in 2000 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with Lea Salonga reprising her role.

This timeless production’s depiction of love, sacrifice, and resilience speaks to the Asian cultural fabric. Miss Saigon doesn’t just entertain; it offers a personal reflection of shared experiences and is a reminder of the unyielding spirit.

Led by Filipino-Australians Abigail Adriano and Seann Miley Moore, alongside a stellar international cast, this iteration promises to captivate with its reimagined interpretations and dynamic portrayals. With each member bringing their unique flavor and perspective to the stage, this new cast offers an exciting opportunity for audiences to see Miss Saigon in a new light while still honoring its essence.

Here are four reasons why you shouldn’t miss it, coming from the cast and creator themselves:

A Story that Transcends Time

“A production that is brave and [is] a reflection of the times,” says co-creator Claude-Michel Schönberg. Miss Saigon remains a timeless classic because it portrays the ups and downs of love, loss, and strength during wartime. Its honest storytelling connects with people from all walks of life, showing how human emotions and struggles are universal, no matter the era.

Asian Representation

“A big Slaysian energy,” shares Seann Miley Moore, when asked about what the new set of cast brings to the stage. Four Asian individuals, each with their distinct backgrounds and experiences, join forces to bring a diverse blend of cultures to the forefront of Miss Saigon. Their unique perspectives and personal stories infuse the production with authenticity and richness, creating a vibrant tapestry of Asian talent on stage.

Women Empowerment

Women empowerment takes center stage as the portrayal of Kim, played by Abigail Adriano, embodies strength and courage in the face of adversity. Through her journey, the production highlights the resilience of women amidst the turmoil of war, emphasizing their ability to overcome challenges and assert their agency in shaping their destinies.

A full circle moment

The return of Miss Saigon to the Philippines marks a significant full-circle moment for the cast, which includes Filipino actors Abigail Adriano, Seann Miley Moore, and Kiara Dario in key roles. For the actors, performing in their homeland holds deep personal meaning.

From heartfelt performances to electrifying musical numbers, this production invites audiences to embark on a journey of rediscovery, making it a must-see event for theater enthusiasts. Miss Saigon will take place at the Theatre at Solaire from March 23 to May 12.
