What does it mean to live, continue, endure, and sustain? How is “being” perceived between conflicts of community versus individual, human organization versus human nature, reason versus reflex, external versus internal, and order versus anarchy?

These are the questions that guide the Langgam Performance Troupe’s first live theater experience after three years. In 2023, this theater company focused on experimental, process-based, and practice-as-research works will stage Pangulong Bangaw.

Pangulong Bangaw is a poetic adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel, The Lord of the Flies, a tragic parody that centers on a group of boys stranded on a deserted island as they struggle to reconcile their different approaches to survival. Transposed into a one-man show, Pangulong Bangaw examines the human body as an allegory of a society that struggles to keep itself from becoming undone and dismembered.

The show is helmed by Langgam’s Artistic Director, Jenny-Logico Cruz. Her interest in non-conventional and introspective performances, coupled with her training from the University of Roehampton (London, UK), fuels this three-year investigation into the most exciting limits of a singular actor’s capacity to embody Golding’s sizeable cast of characters. Joining her in the artistic team are Palanca award-winning playwright, Jay Crisostomo IV, and dramaturg, Cinema One finalist Blonski Cruz. Together, these three thespians have adapted Lord of the Flies into an exploration of one’s various perceptions of “being” within the context of a partisan contemporary Philippines. Stepping into the unique challenge of this performance is the play’s singular actor, film, theater, and TV actor Joel Garcia.

Pangulong Bangaw will be touring several venues within Metro Manila from April to May 2023.
